Brief history:
Onipe's history dates back to 1886, when the Church Missionary Society (C.M.S.) established a mission station in what is now Oluyole Local Government. Pa Orukotan founded the station, which became a place of worship called "Bethel" at Onipe, where Christians gathered to pray and sing. The name "Onipe" comes from an animal Pa Orukotan hunted, covered in scales, called "Ipe" in Yoruba.
During this time, Ibadan residents sought land for crops like cocoa, coffee, and tobacco. Christians from various C.M.S. churches in Ibadan were given land at Onipe. The mission station aimed to separate Christian converts from pagan environments, creating a community for worship. Many Onipe church members trace their roots to older churches like St. David’s Cathedral, Kudeti, and St. James' Cathedral, Oke-Bola.
